A Drain Test Plug seals off the end of a drain so it can be tested for leaks with air or water. Building control often want new drains tested before they are backfilled, and these plugs make that possible.

How a drain test plug works

The plug has a rubber seal between two plates. Tightening the wing nut squeezes the plates together, so the seal swells out against the inside of the pipe. A cap on the plug keeps it sealed, or you can use it to connect test gear. It suits DIY and trade use on drains and sewers.

Choose the size by the inside diameter of the pipe you are sealing. Clean out any grease, silt or debris where the plug will sit, and make sure no dirt is trapped between the seal and the plates. Push the plug in square to the pipe wall, then tighten the wing nut and the cap firmly. Check it holds before you start the test. Related tools are in the sink and drain section.

How do I fit a drain test plug?

Pick the plug that suits the pipe’s inside diameter, clean the bore, and push the plug in. Tighten the wing nut so the rubber expands and grips the pipe wall evenly.

Does my council need to see a drain test?

In Scotland the building standards team at the council may want new drains tested before the trench is backfilled. Ask them what they need on your warrant before you book the inspection.

Can I reuse a drain test plug?

Yes, they are made to be used again and again. Rinse off grit after each test, keep the rubber out of sunlight, and replace the seal if it is split or has gone hard.
