The Arctic SleepSafe Co2 and Smoke Alarm is a battery powered combined smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, with a separate test button for each, for bedrooms, hallways and rooms with a boiler. Pick it up from Plumb Parts in Glasgow.

Description

Despite the name, the Arctic SleepSafe Co2 and Smoke Alarm detects carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke, not carbon dioxide. It puts both alarms in one unit, so a single device warns you of a fire or of dangerous carbon monoxide.

About the SleepSafe smoke and CO alarm

Carbon monoxide has no smell or colour, so an alarm is the only way to know it is there. A faulty boiler, gas fire or blocked flue can all produce it. A combined unit is handy as an extra alarm in flats and small houses. It runs on a 9V battery, which comes in the box, so there is no wiring.

Specification

  • Connection: Battery powered, 9V battery included
  • Suitable for: Detecting smoke and carbon monoxide

Common Questions

Does the SleepSafe detect carbon dioxide?

No. Despite the Co2 in the name, it detects carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke. Carbon monoxide is the dangerous gas from faulty fuel-burning appliances.

Where should a combined smoke and CO alarm go?

Follow the siting rules in the instructions. A combined unit is a compromise, because smoke alarms go on the ceiling while CO alarms have their own height and distance rules, so check both.

How often should I test the alarm?

Press the test buttons once a month and change the battery as soon as the low battery warning sounds. Replace the whole alarm when it reaches the end of its stated life.

Fitting and testing in Glasgow homes

Follow the siting guidance on the instructions. As a rule, keep a smoke alarm off walls and away from corners, and do not put it in a kitchen or bathroom where steam and cooking set it off. For carbon monoxide, the room with the boiler or a fuel-burning appliance is the priority. Test both functions once a month with the buttons and change the battery when it warns you. Scottish homes now need specific alarm types, so check what the property needs before relying on any single unit.
