Description

Drain Testing Dye is a strong colour that you mix with cold water and flush down a fitting, so you can see exactly where that water comes out. Each pack holds 200g, and the range covers blue, green, red, yellow and purple.

Jobs for drain testing dye

It answers the questions that come up on every drainage job. Which manhole does this gully run to? Is the kitchen waste connected to the foul drain or the surface water? Where is that leak or wet patch coming from? Pour a little dyed water into the fitting, then lift covers and watch for the colour. With several colours, you can test more than one fitting at a time and tell them apart.

Common Questions

Is drain testing dye harmful to the environment?

Use only as much as you need and follow the pack directions. If the run goes to a burn or surface water drain, keep the dose small and let the water authority know if you are testing a public sewer.

How much dye do I need for one test?

A small spoonful mixed in a bucket of cold water is often enough on a short run. Longer or dirtier runs need a bit more, so start low and add if the colour is hard to spot.

Which colour is easiest to see in a drain?

Bright green and yellow tend to stand out best against dark water and pipe walls. Red and purple are handy as second and third colours when you test several fittings at once.

Tips from a Glasgow plumbers merchant

A little goes a long way, so start with a small amount and add more if the colour is weak. Flush with plenty of clean water so the dye travels the full length of the run. Use a different colour for each fitting if you are checking several, and note which went where. Wear gloves, as the powder stains hands and clothes. Think about where the water ends up, especially near a burn or surface water drain.

Drain Testing Dye sits with smoke pellets and other testing kit in our accessories section.
