Description

The McAlpine A10 is a plastic bottle trap for a basin waste. It is 1 1/4″ (32mm), the standard size for bathroom and cloakroom basins. This McAlpine 32mm bottle trap suits plumbers and bathroom fitters on new work, and householders swapping out a cracked or leaking trap.

The top screws onto the basin waste and the outlet takes the waste pipe through a Multifit compression joint. McAlpine say that outlet suits plastic, copper and lead pipe, which helps when you are tying into old pipework. The standard McAlpine bottle trap holds a 75mm water seal, which stops drain smells coming back into the room. The bottom unscrews so you can clear hair and soap without taking the whole trap off.

We stock genuine McAlpine traps and wastes. Collect from our Glasgow shop or order online.

Common Questions

How does a bottle trap work?

Water sits in the bottom of the trap after each use and forms a seal. That seal stops smells from the drain getting back up through the basin.

How do I fit a McAlpine bottle trap?

Screw the top onto the basin waste, then push the outlet onto the waste pipe and do up the compression nut by hand. Run the tap and check every joint for drips.

How do I know what size trap I need?

Basins normally take a 1 1/4″ (32mm) trap. Baths, showers and kitchen sinks normally take 1 1/2″ (40mm). Match the trap to the waste and the pipe.

Do I need PTFE tape on a plastic trap?

No. The trap seals on its own washers and the nuts are done up by hand. Over tightening with a wrench can split the nut.
