A Polyplumb Plastic Pipe Stiffener is a short insert that goes inside the end of plastic pipe before it enters a fitting. It keeps the pipe round and firm, so the seal has something solid to grip.
Why a Polyplumb Plastic Pipe Stiffener matters
Plastic pipe is soft, and cutting it can squash the end slightly out of shape. Without support, the O ring can lose its seal and the pipe can creep. The maker asks for a stiffener in plastic pipe when making joints in its Push Fit range. Copper pipe does not need one, because it is already rigid.
- Sizes: 10mm, 15mm, 22mm and 28mm
- Plastic insert for plastic pipe
- One needed for every joint in plastic pipe
- Not needed on copper
Trim the pipe with a sharp plastic pipe cutter, keeping it square. Slide the stiffener home so its collar rests on the cut edge. If it is tight, a gentle tap on a flat surface will seat it. Then push the pipe into the fitting. Keep a handful in the van, because running short leads to joints made without one. The steel version and all fittings are under Polyplumb Fittings.

Common Questions
When should you use a plastic pipe insert? Every time you push plastic pipe into a Polyplumb fitting, so the pipe keeps its shape and the joint seals. Copper pipe does not need one.
Does 15mm plastic pipe need inserts? Yes, and this stiffener is the 15mm one. Polyplumb stiffeners also come in 10mm, 22mm and 28mm to match other pipe sizes.
How do you fit a plastic pipe insert? Cut the pipe square with a proper pipe cutter, push the stiffener fully into the pipe end, then push the pipe firmly into the fitting.
What is a pipe stiffener? It is a short liner that sits inside the end of plastic pipe so the pipe does not squash when it goes into a fitting. This one is the 15mm Polyplumb plastic version.
Can you use compression fittings on plastic pipe? Yes, but put a stiffener in the pipe end first so the olive has something firm to grip against. Without one, the pipe can be crushed and the joint may weep.
How do you remove plastic pipe fittings? Polyplumb joints can be taken apart and reused, so follow the demounting steps in the Polypipe installation guide. Always isolate and drain the pipe before you start.
