A Polyplumb Steel Pipe Stiffener is a metal sleeve that slides inside the end of plastic pipe before jointing. It keeps the pipe from squashing when a fitting grips it.
When to fit a Polyplumb Steel Pipe Stiffener
Plastic pipe needs internal support at every joint, both in Push Fit fittings and in Compression fittings. The maker lists both plastic and metal stiffeners for its range. Many fitters prefer metal ones where the pipe goes into a Compression fitting, because the olive squeezes hard on the pipe wall. Copper pipe never needs one.

Cut the pipe cleanly and square. Slide the stiffener in until the lip sits on the end of the pipe. If it is tight, tap it in gently against a flat surface rather than forcing it with pliers.
