A Spring Check Valve F x F is a one way valve where a spring holds the check shut until flow pushes it open. Both ends have female threads, so it screws onto male fittings and nipples.

Because a spring closes it, the valve does not rely on gravity. That means it can go in horizontal or vertical pipework, with flow going up or down. It shuts quickly when flow stops, which helps prevent hammer on pump sets. You see them on booster pumps, plant rooms, cold water feeds and threaded steel systems.

Put tape or paste on the male threads and tighten with a spanner on the flats of the valve body. Fit it with the arrow pointing downstream. Spring check or swing check: which is better?

A spring check closes fast and works in any position, which suits pump outlets and vertical pipes. A swing check has less resistance but needs fitting the right way up.

What do I seal the threads with?

Seal the male threads going into it with PTFE tape or a sealing paste. Steady the valve with a spanner on its flats while each joint is tightened.

Why is my spring check valve noisy?

A spring check can chatter if the flow is very low or the pump surges. A different valve size or a steadier flow usually cures it.
