The Thermostatic Mixing Valve 15-22mm blends hot and cold water to a steady, safe outlet temperature. Used on basins, showers and baths. Available from Plumb Parts in Glasgow.
Scald protection at the tap starts with a Thermostatic Mixing Valve 15-22mm. It takes in hot and cold water, mixes them, and holds the outlet at the temperature you set, even when the supply pressure or temperature changes.
Where a Thermostatic Mixing Valve 15-22mm fits
A TMV is fitted close to the outlet it protects, for example under a basin in a care home, school or nursery, or on the feed to a bath or shower. In a house it is often fitted on the bath feed to limit how hot the water comes out.
Fit it with the hot and cold inlets the right way round. Put isolating valves and strainers on the supplies, if the valve does not have them built in, so it can be serviced later. Once water is flowing, check the mixed temperature at the tap with a thermometer and adjust. After that, check it now and then, because scale can affect the thermostat over time.
Other mixing valves are listed in Thermostatic Mixing Valves.

Common Questions
What temperature should a TMV be set at?
It depends on the outlet. A bath is often set around 44 to 46°C and a basin around 41°C, but follow the guidance for the building and its users.
Does a TMV stop Legionella?
It lets the hot store stay hot enough to control bacteria while delivering safer water at the tap. Keep the mixed water run to the outlet short.
How often should a TMV be checked?
Check the outlet temperature and the cold fail test on a yearly schedule as a minimum. Care homes and hard water areas want it done more often.
