Common Questions
What is a galvanised malleable iron socket F x F? It’s a short threaded fitting with a female thread at both ends, used to join two male threaded pipes or fittings end to end. It’s the threaded iron equivalent of a straight coupler, and we do it from 1/8 inch up to 4 inch.
Will a galvanised socket rust? The zinc coating is there to protect the iron, and malleable iron fittings are chosen for their corrosion resistance. If the coating gets badly damaged, for example by stilsons, the bare iron underneath can start to rust.
Can I use this galvanised socket on water pipework? Malleable iron fittings like this are used on sanitary and heating installations, sprinkler systems and general non-aggressive media. Seal the threads with a suitable jointing compound or PTFE tape.
Can I use a galvanised socket on gas pipework? Malleable iron fittings are used on gas installations, but any work on a gas supply has to be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. They’ll decide whether galvanised or black iron is the right choice for that job.
Will a galvanised socket screw onto black iron pipe? Yes, the galvanised and black malleable fittings are made to the same pattern, so the threads mate. The only difference is the finish: galvanised has a zinc coat, black is left plain.
Can I join a galvanised socket to copper pipe? Not directly, because the socket only takes male threads at each end. Screw in a copper-to-male-iron adaptor, solder or compression, and run your copper from that.
