A small 1/4″ air vent for releasing trapped air from a radiator or heating fitting with a 1/4″ tapping. A useful spare for bleeding rads that need the smaller thread. Sold by Plumb Parts in Glasgow.

Description

This small air vent has a 1/4″ thread for radiators and fittings that use the smaller tapping. It lets out air that collects at high points so the heating can run quietly and evenly.

When you need a 1/4″ air vent

Some radiators and fittings take a 1/4″ vent rather than the more common 1/2″. If the old vent is snapped or seized, measure it or bring it to the counter so the new one matches.

Isolate the radiator or drain the section of pipework before removing the old vent. Clean the thread, wrap the new vent with PTFE, and screw it in snug. Do not overtighten, since small threads strip easily. A smear of jointing paste on top of the tape helps on an old, worn fitting.

Refill, then bleed the air until water appears. Keep a cloth under the vent, because the first spurt is often dirty. If the system is sealed, top it back up to the right pressure on the gauge.

Common Questions

Is a 1/4″ vent easy to tell apart from a 1/2″ one?

The 1/4″ is noticeably smaller across the thread. If you are unsure, bring the old vent in so it can be matched.

Should I use PTFE on such a small thread?

A few wraps of PTFE tape help it seal. Tighten gently, because small threads strip easily if you lean on them.

What do I do after fitting the new vent?

Refill or reopen the valves, then bleed until clean water appears. On a sealed system, bring the pressure back up on the gauge.
