For small bore pipework, the Arctic Spray Starter Kit 250ml 8mm-15mm gives you a can of freezing spray sized for pipes from 8mm up to 15mm. It freezes a plug of ice inside the pipe so you can cut into a live run.
What the Arctic Spray Starter Kit 250ml 8mm-15mm is for
Most domestic jobs on 15mm and microbore pipe fall into this kit’s range. Think of a dripping isolating valve under a sink, a radiator valve that needs changing, or a tee for a new outside tap. Draining a whole heating system for that is slow, but a freeze takes minutes. The kit is a good first buy if you have never frozen a pipe before.
Before spraying, stop the flow. On heating, that means switching off the boiler and pump. On mains water, make sure no taps or appliances are drawing water, so nothing moves. Pick a straight piece of pipe with room to work, and keep the freeze a fair distance from where you will solder. If the pipe is plastic, check the instructions, because freezing times differ from copper. Let the ice thaw naturally once the joint is made. No, it is matched to small pipes up to 15mm. For bigger heating and water pipe, use the larger kit in the range.
Can I freeze plastic pipe?
Some freezing kits are not suitable for plastic, and frozen plastic can crack. Read the instructions on the can before trying it on anything but copper.
How long will the ice plug hold?
Only for a limited time once you stop spraying. Have your fittings ready before you freeze, and top up with spray if the job runs on.
