Automatic bypass valve, 22mm compression both ends, with a lockable setting, for fitting between heating flow and return. Collect from 555 South Street, Glasgow.
This automatic bypass valve 22mm fits between the flow and return on a wet central heating system. It opens a path for water when the radiator valves close down, so the pump and boiler always have some flow. It suits heating engineers and plumbers fitting TRVs, a new boiler or a new pump.
Both ends are 22mm compression, so it goes onto copper pipe with a nut and olive and two spanners. The opening point is set on the cap, and once you have it right you lock it by tightening the screws in the cap. That way it does not get knocked out of setting by someone in the airing cupboard later. Fit it after the pump, unless the boiler maker says otherwise.
We keep these on the shelf at our Glasgow counter. Collect from the shop, or order online.

Common Questions
What is an automatic bypass valve?
It is a spring loaded valve fitted between the heating flow and return. When the TRVs shut and the pressure in the system builds up, it opens and lets water go round. That protects the pump and boiler and cuts down noise.
How does an automatic bypass valve work?
A spring holds the valve shut against the system pressure. As more radiator valves close, the pressure across it rises until it pushes the valve open. When the radiators open again the pressure drops and it closes.
How do I set an automatic bypass valve?
With the system hot and running, close most of the radiators down. Turn the cap until the flow noise stops and the boiler is not short cycling. Then tighten the screws in the cap to lock the setting.
Do I need a bypass if all my radiators have TRVs?
Usually yes, unless the boiler instructions say it has its own bypass. Leave one radiator without a TRV or fit an automatic bypass so the boiler always has a path for water.
