Does a black malleable iron socket rust? The black finish isn’t a rust-proof coating, so it can rust if it’s left damp or outdoors. For wet or outside spots, the galvanised version is the better choice.

What is black malleable iron? It’s a cast iron that’s been heat treated so it’s tougher and less brittle than ordinary grey cast iron. Ours is the blackheart type to BS EN 1562, left with a plain black finish.

Is black malleable iron good for water? It’s well suited to closed heating systems, but it isn’t the usual pick for drinking water lines. For potable supplies, stick with copper or plastic.

Can black malleable iron be welded? These sockets are made for screwed joints on threaded pipe, so they’re not meant to be welded. Seal the threads and tighten them up instead.
