Brass Fittings

Brass is one of the most common materials used for making fittings, as a construction material is an alloy (primarily) of copper and zinc.

Brass fittings are in high demand because of some inherent properties which make them superior to other materials and are suitable for carrying water, gases, chemicals, fire sprinkler systems, etc. Brass and DZR fittings are designed and manufactured in sizes ranging from 1/8″ to 4″.

They are available in either BSPT parallel or taper threads to BS EN 10226-BSPT parallel or taper threads to BS EN 10226-1:2004/BS 21 – ISO7/1.

Most brass threaded fittings are hot forged, giving them greater strength to weight ratio.
Fittings made of brass are available in a wide variety of shapes and thread sizes to connect, control any air or liquid flow in a pipe or tube.

Brass fittings are used in industrial, automotive, and truck applications because they are strong and durable.
The advantages of brass for fittings include its good corrosive resistance, and also it’s plating, joining, polishing and finishing characteristics.

Brass as a material is easily machined and so can be given any shapes of the various types of fittings available.

 • Relative Softness of Metal Provides for a Tight Seal and Ease of Installation.
 • Brass provides a more solid platform (vs. plastics) to facilitate the flow of air and liquids.
 • Brass fittings have excellent high-temperature ductility and reasonable cold ductility.

Common Questions

What is a hex nipple? It is a short fitting with a male thread at each end and a hexagon in the middle for the spanner. It lets you join into a female fitting or appliance.

What is a chrome hex nipple used for? It is for places where you need male threads into a female fitting and the joint will be on show, like an exposed appliance or tap connection. The chrome gives it a tidy finish.

How do I measure a hex nipple size? They go by the thread size rather than a tape measurement, and this one is 1/2 inch at both ends. If you are not sure, bring the old fitting into our South Street shop and we will check it.

How do I seal a chrome hex nipple? Put PTFE tape or a suitable thread sealant on both male threads, then tighten with a spanner on the hexagon. Go gently with the spanner so you do not mark the chrome.

What is the chrome hex nipple made from? It is brass, a copper and zinc alloy, with a chrome plated finish for a tidy look.
