Climaflex Pipe Insulation 22mm x 13mm

Heating primaries and cylinder pipework are usually 22mm, and Climaflex pipe insulation 22mm x 13mm is the standard lagging for them. Each 2 metre tube has 13mm of foam all round.

The pipes between the boiler and the cylinder carry a lot of heat. Left bare, they warm the airing cupboard and the floor void instead of the water. Lagging them keeps more heat where it is meant to go, so the cylinder heats faster. It also suits 22mm cold mains running through a loft.

Start at the boiler end and work along, butting each length tight to the last. Tape the joints and any slits. Cut the foam neatly round pump valves and zone valves, so they can still be worked. Keep it a little back from the boiler casing if the instructions ask for clearance. A neat, fully lagged cupboard also makes leaks easier to spot later.

Common Questions

Why lag the 22mm primaries between boiler and cylinder?

Bare primaries lose heat into the airing cupboard instead of the cylinder. Lagging them means the cylinder heats faster and the boiler runs less.

Is 13mm the right wall for 22mm cold pipes in a loft?

For cold loft pipes, a thicker wall gives better frost cover. 13mm suits 22mm pipes inside the heated part of the house.

Can lagging go right up to the boiler?

Keep it back where the boiler instructions ask for clearance. Otherwise run it right up to the fittings so no copper is left bare.
