Where should an auto air vent go?
At the highest point of the pipework or on top of an air separator, where air collects.

Why is my air vent leaking?
Dirt on the seal. Take it off, clean it or replace it, and fit an isolating valve below so it can be changed without draining down.

Do I still need to bleed radiators?
Now and then, yes. The vent clears air from the pipe it sits on; radiators still trap their own pockets.
