Flexible Connector Couplings For Clay Pipe to Clay Pipe are for joining one clay drain to another, usually when a cracked or root-damaged section has been cut out and a new length dropped in. The rubber sleeve slips over both ends and clips pull it tight.
Where they’re used
Clay is still under most older properties round here. When a section fails, it’s often easiest to dig down, cut out the bad length, and fit a new piece of clay with a flexible coupling at each end. Repairs after a collapsed joint or a tree root intrusion are the common jobs. The flexible joint also allows a little ground movement, which rigid mortared clay joints never did. These couplings are for gravity drainage, not pressure.
Sizes available
Sizes are nominal. Clay pipe from different eras and makers varies on the outside, so measure the outside diameter of both ends before ordering.
Fitting tips
Cut the clay square with a proper cutter or disc and check for hairline cracks beyond the cut. Clean off old mortar, soil and roots. Fit the coupling over one end, bring the new pipe in, slide the coupling across the gap so it’s centred, and tighten the clips evenly. Bed everything on pea gravel and surround the joint before backfilling so it isn’t stressed. Joining clay to plastic instead? Have a look at the adaptors in our flexible rubber connectors range.

Common Questions
How do I replace a broken length of clay drain?
Cut out the damaged piece with square cuts, measure the gap, and drop in a new length with a coupling at each end. Slide each coupling so it sits centred over the joint before tightening the clips.
Will the 6″ x 6″ fit any 6 inch clay pipe?
The sizes are nominal, and the outside of clay pipe varies with age and maker. Measure round the outside of both ends and compare them before buying, especially on old salt-glazed pipe.
What should the joint be bedded in?
Bed and surround the pipe and coupling in pea gravel so the joint is supported along its length. That stops the coupling being pushed out of line when the trench is backfilled.
