Description

Flexible Soil Clay Adaptors For Clay to Plastic Cast Iron connect old clay or cast iron soil and drain pipe to new plastic, with a stepped rubber body held by clips. They’re the fittings you reach for when an extension, new WC or drain repair has to tie into the old system.

What it’s used for

Old Glasgow tenements and houses are full of salt-glazed clay drains and cast iron stacks, and their outside diameters rarely match modern plastic. A flexible adaptor gets round that: one end clamps onto the old pipe and the other onto the new, and the rubber takes up the difference in size and a touch of misalignment. It’s for gravity soil and drainage, not pressure pipework.

Sizes available

Sizes are nominal. Clay and iron pipes of the same nominal bore can vary a lot on the outside, so measure the actual outside diameter of both pipes and bring the figures to the counter.

Fitting tips

Cut the clay back to a sound, square end. Clay often cracks a bit beyond the obvious break, so check it carefully and clean off any old mortar or roots. Plastic should be cut square and deburred. Push both pipes fully in, then tighten the clips evenly. Below ground, bed the adaptor and pipes properly on pea gravel so the joint isn’t left carrying the load. Spare clips are available in the same range, and our flexible rubber connectors section has couplings and reducers too.

Common Questions

How do I tell which size adaptor I need?

Measure the outside of the old clay or iron pipe and the outside of the new plastic pipe. Bring both figures to the counter, because nominal sizes on old drains are only a rough guide.

Can I use it on a cracked clay pipe end?

Not as it is. Cut the clay back until you reach sound pipe with no hairline cracks, because the rubber needs a solid end to grip.

Is it fine to use where a new extension meets an old drain?

Yes, that is one of the most common jobs for it. Bed the joint properly, keep the pipes in line, and let building control see the connection if the work needs a warrant.
