JG Speedfit Barrier Pipe Straight 22mm x 6m

The JG Speedfit Barrier Pipe Straight 22mm x 6m is a long straight length of 22mm PE-X barrier pipe for plumbers and heating engineers running heating flow and return, a cold main to a combi, or the main hot and cold runs in a bigger house.

Six metres covers a long hall or a loft crossing with no joint in the middle, and because it has never been coiled it stays straight on the clips. The pipe is white cross-linked polyethylene with five layers and a blue oxygen barrier in the centre, which keeps air out of heating water. It’s made to BS 7291 and carries a WRAS approval.

The JG Speedfit Barrier Pipe Straight 22mm x 6m joins with 22mm Speedfit push-fit fittings and a 22mm insert in every end, or a standard insert into compression. The two things most folk get wrong are clip spacing and insertion depth: Speedfit suggest a clip every 500mm on horizontal 22mm and 800mm on vertical, and the pipe stop in a 22mm fitting is 35mm in. Common Questions

How tight can I bend it? Held with clips either side of the curve, the smallest radius Speedfit give for 22mm PE-X is 225mm. Go tighter than that and you should fit an elbow. Never heat the pipe to help it bend.

Does plastic pipe expand when it’s hot? Yes, by about 1% of its length as it warms from 20°C to 82°C. On long exposed runs that can show as sagging between clips, so clip at the right spacing or box the run in.

Can it connect straight onto a boiler? No. Speedfit want at least a metre of copper run from the boiler casing before you change to plastic, unless the boiler maker’s instructions say otherwise. A gravity primary on a solid fuel range should be copper throughout.

How much heat will 22mm pipe carry? Speedfit’s sizing table puts 22mm at about 13.6kW, based on a flow speed of 1.2m/s and an 11°C drop. Use that as a rough guide when you plan how many radiators a run can feed.
