Common Questions

What is a non-return valve? It’s a valve that only lets water flow one way. This one lets condensate from the boiler out while stopping waste water from coming back.

Why do you need a non-return valve on a condensate pipe? Where a condensate pipe joins into sanitary pipework, this stops waste water from the drain backing up into the boiler.

Which way does a non-return valve go? This McAlpine valve is made for a vertical in-line run, fitted so the flow goes from the boiler towards the drain. Check the McAlpine CONVALVE technical drawing for the correct orientation.

Can non-return valves fail? They can, as debris can stop a valve closing properly. It’s worth checking it as part of the boiler’s routine servicing.

What size pipe does it fit? It has a 19/23mm inlet and outlet, the standard size for condensate pipe.

Does it meet building regulations? Yes, it conforms to BS 6798:2009 and Building Regulations Approved Document H.
