Common Questions

What is a swivel P trap? It’s a P trap with a joint that turns, so you can swing the outlet round to meet the waste pipe rather than cutting pipework to suit. The SG10 is a running trap, which means it sits in line on a horizontal waste run.

Why is a P trap necessary? The dip in the trap holds a little water, and that water stops drain smells and gases coming back up into the room. Without one you’d get foul air through the waste.

Can you rotate a P trap? With a swivel trap like this one, yes. Turn it until the outlet lines up with the pipe without any strain, then make the joints up.

Why is it called a P trap? Seen side on, the bend and the outlet look like a letter P lying on its side. The water seal sits in the curve at the bottom.

How do you put in a P trap? Set the trap between the waste and the onward pipe, swivel it so nothing is forced, and keep a steady fall on the run. Then run some water and check every joint for drips.

What is the McAlpine SG10 made from? It’s moulded in polypropylene and made to BS EN 274-1.
