The Polyplumb Grey Polybutylene Barrier Pipe Coil is plastic plumbing pipe on a roll, for long runs under floors, through ceilings and for underfloor heating, where straight lengths would mean too many joints. It comes in four diameters and several coil lengths.
What Polyplumb grey polybutylene barrier pipe coil is used for
Coiled Polyplumb is used for central heating, hot and cold water and underfloor heating loops. An oxygen barrier layer within the wall stops oxygen getting into the heating water. It isn’t suitable for gas, oil, compressed air, solar heating, or primary and gravity pipework from a solid fuel back boiler.
- 10mm: 25m, 50m, 100m, for microbore radiator drops
- 15mm: 25m, 50m, 100m, 150m, for radiator and outlet feeds and UFH loops
- 22mm: 25m, 50m, for heating mains and cold mains
- 28mm: 25m, 50m, for larger primaries
Unroll the coil rather than pulling loops off the side, and let it lie out in a warm room for a while if it’s been in a cold van, as it’ll be more willing to straighten. Use plastic pipe cutters for square ends. Every joint into a Polyplumb fitting needs a pipe stiffener and full insertion. Clip it regularly and keep it away from sharp edges in joists. Sleeve it in conduit where it passes through walls, screed or expansion joints. Our Polyplumb pipe section has conduit and straight lengths.

Common Questions
What is barrier coil pipe? It’s polybutylene pipe with an oxygen barrier built into its wall, supplied on a roll rather than in straight lengths. This one is PolyPlumb grey, available in 10mm, 15mm, 22mm and 28mm.
What is barrier pipe used for? It’s for central heating, hot and cold water and underfloor heating. The barrier stops oxygen getting into heating water, so there’s less corrosion and sludge in radiators and the boiler.
Why buy a coil rather than straight lengths? A coil lets you do a long run with no joints, so there are fewer places that could leak under floors or above ceilings. It’s the usual choice for underfloor heating loops.
Do I need stiffeners with coiled PolyPlumb pipe? Yes, put a pipe stiffener in every end before it goes into a PolyPlumb fitting, and make sure it’s pushed fully home.
Does it need to be sleeved? Yes, run it in conduit where it passes through walls, screed or expansion joints. That protects the pipe and leaves it room to move as it heats up.
How do I stop the coil kinking when I lay it? Unroll it rather than pulling loops off the side. If it’s been sitting in a cold van, leave it in a warm room for a while and it will lie straighter.
