What 22mm Polyplumb polybutylene barrier pipe is used for

22mm Polyplumb is the plastic answer to 22mm copper, with no soldering and far fewer joints, as it flexes through joists and round corners. The barrier pipe has an oxygen barrier layer built into the wall, which matters on heating, where oxygen in the water leads to rust and sludge. It suits hot and cold water as well as central heating.

It is not for gas, oil or compressed air, nor for solar heating or the primaries of a solid fuel back boiler.

Use a proper plastic pipe cutter for a clean, square end. Push a stiffener into the pipe, then push it into the Polyplumb fitting until it bottoms out, and mark the depth so you can see it hasn’t backed off. Before connecting near a boiler, read its installation manual, as some makers ask for copper off the boiler connections before you change to plastic. Clip at closer spacings than copper. It has the same outside size, so it takes 22mm Push Fit fittings. Check the boiler instructions, as some want copper off the boiler first.

Mark the insertion depth on the pipe before pushing it in. If the mark meets the fitting, it is in.

Is Polyplumb pipe OK on a solid fuel back boiler?

No. Solid fuel back boiler primaries can run far hotter than a gas system, so use copper there instead.
