A Red Lever Ball Valve F x F gives you a quick on and off point on threaded pipework. Both ends carry a female thread, so it screws straight onto male BSP fittings or nipples. A quarter turn of the red lever opens or closes the ball inside.
Using a Red Lever Ball Valve F x F on threaded pipe
You see these on steel heating mains, plant rooms, boiler houses and the odd domestic job where threaded fittings are already in place. The lever tells you the position at a glance. Lever parallel to the pipe: flowing. Lever at right angles: closed. That makes it easy for anyone on site to check.
- Female BSP thread on both ends
- Sizes: 1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 3/4″, 1″, 1.1/4″, 1.1/2″, 2″, 2.1/2″, 3″ and 4″
- Quarter turn red lever handle
- Seal the mating male threads with PTFE tape or a thread paste
When fitting, hold the valve body with a spanner on the flats rather than gripping the lever. If you twist the body against the handle, you can strain the spindle. Also check the lever has clearance through its whole 90 degree travel, because a valve that only half opens is a common callback. For other isolation and check valves, have a look through our Valves and Control Devices.

Common Questions
Is a red lever valve only for heating?
Red is often used on heating circuits as a colour code, but the colour does not change what the valve does. Check the service it is fitted to is one it suits.
Do the 3″ and 4″ sizes need anything different?
They are heavy, so support the pipe either side and use proper pipe wrenches. Tape or paste the male threads just as on small sizes.
Can I tell if it is open by looking?
Yes. The lever lies along the pipe when open and across it when closed.
