Isolating a supply without restricting the flow is what a Gate Valve F x F does well. F x F means female by female, so both ends have a female thread and take male fittings or threaded pipe.
Where a Gate Valve F x F suits
A gate valve lifts a wedge clear of the bore when it is open, so water passes through almost unrestricted. That makes it a good choice on low pressure gravity supplies, for example the outlet of a cold water storage tank. It also works well on larger threaded steel pipework in boiler houses and on commercial mains.
It is turned by a wheel handle, several turns from open to closed. It is meant for isolation, not for throttling flow. Also, left in one position for years, a gate valve can stiffen, so exercise it now and then.
Seal the male threads that go into it with PTFE or a jointing compound. Other valves are in Valves & Control Devices.

Common Questions
Which way does a gate valve close?
Turn the wheel clockwise to close and anticlockwise to open. It takes several turns, so keep going until it stops rather than forcing it.
Can I fit a gate valve on a mains supply?
It will isolate a mains run, but a gate valve is more often used on low pressure and larger threaded pipework. On a domestic rising main, a stopcock or quarter turn valve is the usual choice.
What goes into a female by female valve?
A male threaded fitting or threaded pipe on each side, such as a hex nipple or a male iron adaptor. Seal those threads with PTFE tape or paste.
