In a shared stair or a public building, a Lockshield Gate Valve Compression x Compression stops people shutting off a supply by mistake. It works like a normal gate valve, but the spindle sits under a lockshield cap, so you need a key or spanner to operate it.

About the Lockshield Gate Valve Compression x Compression

Compression x Compression means Compression at both ends, so it goes onto copper pipe with nuts and olives. With the gate fully open, water flows through with very little restriction. So it suits gravity-fed tank outlets, cylinder feeds and supply branches where full flow matters but the valve should be left alone.

Choose 15mm for single outlets and branches, 22mm for main domestic runs and cylinder feeds, and 28mm for larger supplies. Fit it where you can reach it with a key, and leave it fully open in normal use. Keep the key with the building logbook or near the stopcock, so the next person can find it in an emergency.

Pull the cap off and use a lockshield key, or grips if you must, on the square spindle. Clockwise shuts the gate.

Is a lockshield gate valve the same as a radiator lockshield?

No. A radiator lockshield sets the balance on one radiator, while this is a full-bore gate valve with its spindle covered to stop casual use.

Can it go on a cylinder feed?

Yes. A full-bore valve on the cold feed to a vented cylinder keeps the flow up, and the cap stops anyone closing it by mistake.
