Rothenberger Tap Backnut Spanner for most 1/2″ and 3/4″ tap backnuts. Zinc plated steel with holes for a tommy bar, and it also fits 1/2″ and 3/4″ radiator air valves. Find it at Plumb Parts, Glasgow.
The Rothenberger Tap Backnut Spanner fits most 1/2″ and 3/4″ backnuts on taps. It is a box spanner in zinc plated steel, with holes for a tommy bar when a nut needs extra turning force.
Jobs for the Rothenberger tap backnut spanner
Tap backnuts sit under baths and basins, often crusted with scale, and an adjustable spanner will not reach. This box spanner slides over the tail and grips the nut. It also fits 1/2″ and 3/4″ radiator air valves, which is handy on old sectional radiators. One tool covers two awkward jobs, so it earns its space in the bag.
- Brand: Rothenberger
- Fits most 1/2″ and 3/4″ backnuts
- Zinc plated steel box spanner
- Holes for a tommy bar
Isolate the supply and disconnect the tap connector first. Slide the spanner up over the tail and turn it with a bar through the holes. If the nut is seized, a squirt of penetrating oil and a few minutes’ wait usually helps. Take care on thin basins and baths, as too much force can crack them. Other spanners are in our spanners range.

Common Questions
What is a tap backnut?
It is the large nut under a basin, sink or bath that holds the tap tight to the sanitaryware. A box spanner reaches it where a normal spanner cannot swing.
Why use a tommy bar with the backnut spanner?
Pushing a bar through the holes gives extra turning force on tight or old nuts. It also lets you turn the spanner in a small space.
Will it fit both basin and bath taps?
It fits most 1/2″ backnuts, used on basin and sink taps, and 3/4″ backnuts, used on bath taps.
