Common Questions

What is a solder ring elbow? It’s a copper 90° elbow with solder already built into each socket, so you only need flux and heat to make the joint. Fitters often call them Yorkshire fittings.

How do you solder a solder ring elbow onto copper pipe? Clean the pipe end and inside of the socket until bright, flux the pipe thinly and push it fully home. Heat the fitting evenly until a full ring of solder shows at the mouth, then leave it to cool without moving it.

Can a solder ring elbow be unsoldered and reused? You can heat a joint to take it apart, but once the ring has run there’s no solder left in the fitting. Use a new elbow when you remake the joint.

Can you solder copper pipe with water in it? Not properly. Any water left in the pipe soaks up the heat and turns to steam, so the solder won’t run round the joint; drain down fully before you start.

Can I solder copper pipe without flux? No, you need flux to keep the copper clean while it heats, otherwise the solder won’t take. Use one made for lead-free solder, and approved for drinking water where needed.
