A Carbon Monoxide Detector sounds a warning if CO builds up from a faulty boiler, fire or blocked flue. Fit one in any room with a fuel-burning appliance. Sold by Plumb Parts in Glasgow.

Description

A Carbon Monoxide Detector is a small alarm that sounds when it senses carbon monoxide in the air. CO has no colour, taste or smell, so a detector is the only practical way to know it is building up in a room.

Where a carbon monoxide detector should go

Any appliance that burns gas, oil, coal or wood can produce CO if it is faulty, poorly serviced or has a blocked flue. Fit a detector in the room with the boiler, gas fire or stove, and think about bedrooms too. Landlords have legal duties on CO alarms, and Scottish homes have their own rules, so check what the property needs. A detector is a backup, not a replacement for regular appliance servicing.

Common Questions

How long does a carbon monoxide detector last?

The sensor wears out, so every alarm has a replacement date printed on it or in the leaflet. Write the date somewhere you will see it and change the unit when it is due.

Does Scotland require CO alarms in homes?

Scottish rules ask for a CO alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance, such as a boiler or stove, and in rooms with a flue running through them. Check the current Scottish Government guidance for the property you are working on.

What should I do if the CO alarm goes off?

Get everyone into fresh air, open doors and windows if it is safe, and switch off fuel appliances if you can. Call the gas emergency number and do not use the appliance again until a Gas Safe engineer has checked it.

Fitting advice from our Glasgow counter

Follow the siting instructions that come with the alarm, as height and distance from the appliance matter. As a guide, keep it away from vents, extractor fans and windows, where moving air gives false readings. Test it when you fit it and then regularly after that. Note the replacement date on the unit, because sensors wear out. If the alarm goes off, get everyone outside, open windows if safe, and call the gas emergency line.
