This Lead Free Solder Wire 500g reel is plumbing solder for end feed copper fittings, and it suits plumbers and heating engineers soldering 15mm, 22mm and 28mm copper on water and heating.
Lead free solder is the law on pipework carrying drinking water, under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations and the Scottish Water Byelaws, so it makes sense to carry only lead free and never mix them up. End feed fittings have no solder inside, so you feed the wire into the joint once it is hot. Solder ring fittings already hold their own solder, though a touch of wire can help if a ring joint looks short. A 500g reel lasts a long time on the van.
Clean the pipe and the inside of the fitting until bright, apply flux thinly to the pipe and push the joint together. Heat the fitting, not the solder. When the flux sizzles, touch the wire to the mouth of the joint and let it draw in round the full circle. Lead free solder needs a little more heat than the old leaded type, so give it time. Wipe off flux once it has cooled and protect nearby timber with a heat mat.

Common Questions
Why must I use lead free solder? Lead solder is not allowed on pipework carrying drinking water, under the water fittings regulations and the Scottish Water Byelaws. Lead free is safe for all water and heating joints.
Do I need solder with solder ring fittings? Usually not, as the ring holds enough solder. End feed fittings do need solder wire fed into the joint.
Why won’t my solder run into the joint? The joint is usually dirty, not fluxed or not hot enough. Clean it bright, flux it and heat the fitting until the solder flows when touched to it.
