A 1/2″ air vent for a radiator, used to let out trapped air so the rad heats right across the top. Screws into a spare 1/2″ tapping. Plumb Parts in Glasgow can sort you out.

Description

This air vent has a 1/2″ thread and screws into a radiator tapping, giving you a point to release air from the top of the rad. Trapped air is the usual reason a radiator is hot at the bottom and cold at the top.

Fitting a 1/2″ air vent

Radiators normally come with a vent in one top corner. If it is damaged, missing or seized, swap it for a new one. It needs a matching 1/2″ tapping, so check the old part before you buy.

Turn off the heating and isolate the radiator at both valves. Have towels ready, because some water will come out. Remove the old vent, seal the new one with PTFE or its washer, and screw it in firmly.

Open the valves, bleed out the air until water appears, and close it off. On a sealed system, top up the pressure if the gauge has dropped.

Other radiator accessories are in our Flexible range on the site.

Common Questions

What are the signs of air in a radiator?

If it is warm at the bottom and cold across the top, there is air trapped inside. Gurgling noises from the radiator point the same way.

Can I change an air vent without draining the system?

Close both radiator valves first, then have towels ready, as some water will still come out. On a sealed system, check the pressure gauge once it is back on.

Why does my radiator keep filling with air?

It can point to a small leak letting air in, or to corrosion inside the system. If you are bleeding the same radiator every week, get the system checked and the inhibitor topped up.
