What is the difference between a hexagon nipple and a barrel nipple?

A hexagon nipple has a hex in the middle so you can grip it with a spanner. A barrel nipple has a plain middle and needs grips.

How do I join two female fittings back to back?

A hexagon nipple screws into both and pulls them tight together, which keeps the joint short. Seal both threads before tightening.

Can a hexagon nipple be used to join pipe to a valve?
