Common Questions

What is a reducing socket? It joins two threaded parts of different sizes in a straight line. This MxF version has a male thread on one end and a female thread on the other.

What thread do black malleable iron fittings use? They have taper threads, so the joint tightens up as the male and female threads engage fully. Seal them with PTFE tape or a suitable jointing compound.

Can you use black iron fittings for water? They’re well suited to heating systems, but black iron isn’t the right choice for drinking water as it can rust inside. For drinking water, pick a material approved for it.

Can you use black iron for natural gas? Yes, gas pipework is one of the main uses for black malleable fittings. Any gas work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Can you weld black iron fittings? These are made to be screwed together, not welded. Use the threaded joints as intended.

Can you paint black iron pipe and fittings? Yes. Clean off any oil and dirt first, then use a primer and paint suited to metal.

What sizes does the reducing socket come in? They start at 1/4 inch x 1/8 inch and go up to 4 inch x 3 inch.
