Common Questions

Can I bend black iron pipe instead of using a 90 degree elbow? Bending steel pipe needs proper heavy kit, so on threaded black iron most fitters just use an elbow. This M x F elbow gives a clean right-angle turn without any bending.

When would I use an M x F elbow rather than an F x F one? Use it when you want to turn 90 degrees straight out of a female socket or fitting. The male end screws straight in, so you don’t need a separate nipple.

Is this black iron elbow suitable for gas pipework? Yes, black malleable iron fittings are used on gas, heating and steam pipework. Any gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

How do I seal the threads on a black iron elbow? Wrap the male end with PTFE tape or use a jointing compound before screwing it home. On gas pipework, make sure whatever you use is approved for gas.

Will a black iron M x F elbow rust? The black finish offers little protection from damp, so it can rust in wet or outdoor spots. In those places the galvanised M x F elbow is the better bet.

What standards are the black malleable iron fittings made to? Most of our malleable iron fittings carry the BSI Kitemark and conform to BS EN 10242. They’re made from blackheart malleable iron to BS EN 1562.
