The Caleffi pressure reducing valve 1 1/4 inch brings high mains pressure down to a steady outlet pressure. Suits larger supplies to commercial units and flats. Sold by Plumb Parts, Glasgow.

Description

A Caleffi pressure reducing valve 1 1/4 inch takes the incoming water pressure and holds it at a lower, steady level on the outlet. On a large supply, that protects everything downstream.

Why fit a Caleffi pressure reducing valve 1 1/4

High mains pressure is hard on taps, valves, water heaters and appliances. It also causes noise and wastes water. Fit a reducing valve after the main stopcock, and the building gets a set pressure however much the supply moves about. The 1 1/4 inch size is for bigger supplies, such as small commercial units, blocks of flats or large houses.

  • Connection size: 1 1/4 inch
  • Brand: Caleffi
  • Lowers and steadies incoming water pressure
  • For mains cold water supplies

Flush the pipework before fitting, because grit is the usual reason a reducing valve stops holding its setting. A strainer and an isolating valve ahead of it make servicing much easier. Fit it with the flow arrow the right way round, and leave room to reach the adjustment. Then set the outlet pressure with water flowing, using a gauge, and check it again with the taps shut.

Common Questions

Do I need a pressure reducing valve? If your incoming mains pressure is high or swings about, a pressure reducing valve keeps it at a steady level and protects taps, appliances and pipework. A pressure gauge reading is the best way to find out.

How does a pressure reducing valve work? It uses a spring-loaded diaphragm or piston that opens and closes as needed, letting water through only at the pressure you’ve set, whatever the mains is doing.

How do I adjust a Caleffi pressure reducing valve? Adjustment is made on top of the valve, and it’s best done with a pressure gauge fitted so you can see the outlet setting. Follow Caleffi’s instructions for your model.

Does a pressure reducing valve reduce flow? It lowers pressure, which can mean a slightly gentler flow at the tap. Picking the right size valve for the supply, like this 1 1/4 inch one on larger mains, keeps flow healthy.

Where should a pressure reducing valve be fitted? On the incoming supply, with a strainer before it and isolating valves either side so it can be serviced. Fit it the right way round by following the arrow on the body.

Can you clean a pressure reducing valve? Yes, keeping the strainer clean helps it work properly and last longer. Isolate the supply first and check Caleffi’s instructions for your model.

What is the difference between a pressure reducing valve and a pressure relief valve? A reducing valve sets a steady lower pressure on the supply all the time. A relief valve stays shut and only opens to let water out if pressure climbs too high.
