Where Climaflex pipe insulation earns its keep

35mm pipe usually means a bigger system. Think boiler house flow and return, a heating main in a block of flats, or a cold feed into a commercial kitchen. On those runs, bare pipe throws away heat that somebody is paying for. A 13mm wall is a sensible middle thickness. It does a lot more than the thin 9mm grade but still sits neatly in brackets and voids.

Slide the tube over the pipe before you make the last joints if you can, because that saves cutting it. If the pipe is already in, slit the tube along its length and close it round the pipe. Butt the ends tight to each other. You can glue the joints, tape them or simply push them together, so pick whatever suits the job. Cut it with a sharp knife rather than a saw, as a clean cut closes up better. At bends, mitre the foam so there are no gaps for heat to escape.

Is 35mm Climaflex sized to the outside of the pipe?

Yes, the 35mm figure is the outside diameter it fits, the same way copper is sized. Put a tape or callipers across the pipe before ordering, as old steel and copper can differ.

When is 13mm better than 9mm on a 35mm main?

A 13mm wall keeps noticeably more heat in and gives cold pipes more help against sweating. Stick with 9mm only where clearance is tight and the pipe sits in a heated area.

Does a 35mm main need a vapour barrier over the foam?

Climaflex foam has closed cells, so it resists moisture on its own for ordinary cold water runs. Seal the seams and joints well, because damp air gets in through gaps rather than through the foam.
