For a straight connection into a hot water cylinder, use the End Feed Straight Cylinder Union. One part screws into the cylinder boss, a union nut joins the two halves, and the copper pipe solders into the other end.
Fitting an End Feed Straight Cylinder Union
Seal the thread with PTFE or a jointing compound and screw it into the 1 inch boss. Solder the pipe into its half away from the cylinder where you can, because heat can harm the cylinder lagging. Then pull the halves together with the union nut.
The union is the useful part. When the cylinder needs changing, you undo the nut and the pipe comes away without cutting. 22mm x 1″ is the usual size for domestic cylinder flow and return connections. 28mm x 1″ suits larger cylinders and higher flow systems.
