Sold as MDPE Blue Pipe Coil Main Water Supply 20mm, this is the smaller of the two sizes and suits shorter buried water supplies where 25mm would be overkill. Blue means it’s for drinking water below ground, and you can have it in 25m, 50m or 100m coils.
It’s commonly used for feeding an outside tap at the bottom of a garden, a garage, workshop or allotment shed, or a short connection on site. For a main house supply, check with Scottish Water what size they want, as 25mm is often asked for on new connections. Whatever the size, their guidance is that supply pipes are laid at a depth of 750mm to 1350mm, and anything shallower needs their written approval.
Blue MDPE coil sizes
- 20mm x 25m
- 20mm x 50m
- 20mm x 100m
The pressure rating and standard are printed along the pipe, so check them against your job.
Use 20mm MDPE Compression or Push Fit fittings. Always put a pipe insert in the end before fitting a Compression joint, because it stops the pipe wall squashing and the joint weeping later. Cut it square, take off any burr, and push the pipe fully home. In the trench, bed it on sand and keep stones off it, leaving a little slack so it isn’t pulled tight. Duct it where it passes under paths or through walls, and insulate any bit that comes above ground. Blue MDPE isn’t meant to sit out in daylight.
Inserts, stopcocks and couplers are worth adding when you order MDPE blue pipe coil main water supply. Browse our pipes, hoses and insulation for more.

Common Questions
Should I use 20mm or 25mm MDPE?
20mm suits a short feed to an outside tap, garage or shed. For a house supply, Scottish Water often ask for 25mm, so check with them first.
How do I cut 20mm MDPE?
Use plastic pipe cutters or shears for a square end, then take off any burr. A hacksaw leaves a ragged edge that can spoil a joint.
Can 20mm MDPE connect to copper?
Yes, use a fitting made to go from MDPE to copper, and put a pipe insert in the MDPE before tightening a Compression joint.
