A Mechanical Flange makes a new connection through the wall of a cylinder or tank without brazing or welding. It clamps either side of a hole you cut, and a washer makes the seal, so you get a watertight outlet where there was none before.
What a mechanical flange is for
The 28mm version gives a pipe connection, which helps when a cylinder or tank needs an extra outlet or a new position for a feed. The 2 1/4″ version with washer gives a threaded boss of the size used for immersion heaters. That can mean adding an immersion to a cylinder that never had one, as long as the cylinder is suitable for it.
Specification
- Sizes: 28mm, and 2.1/4″ with washer
- Suitable for: Adding a connection through the wall of a suitable cylinder or tank
Common Questions
Can a mechanical flange be fitted to any cylinder?
Only where the maker allows a hole to be cut and the wall is in good condition. Unvented cylinders must not be altered.
What size hole does a mechanical flange need?
The flange instructions give the hole size. Cut it cleanly and remove all swarf before fitting.
Can I replace the washer on a mechanical flange?
Yes, spare washers are sold on their own. Any time the flange comes off, put it back with a fresh washer.
Before you cut: Glasgow counter advice
Check the cylinder or tank maker allows a hole to be cut in it, and that the wall is sound where the flange will go. Bring the details to the counter so the staff can confirm the Mechanical FLANGE suits your cylinder. Drain down fully, cut a clean hole of the size the flange needs, and remove every bit of swarf. Tighten evenly so the washer beds down flat, then refill and check for leaks once the water is hot.
