Description

Microbore copper pipe is the small, soft coiled tube used to feed radiators on microbore heating systems, and here it comes in 8mm and 10mm sizes. Each size is sold in a 10m or a 25m coil.

Fitting microbore copper pipe

Microbore systems run a pair of small pipes from a manifold or a tee on the main to each radiator. Because the tube is soft, it bends by hand round joists and corners, so you need far fewer fittings. It also slips through notches and holes that larger pipe would not. The trade off is lower flow, so 10mm is the usual pick for bigger radiators and 8mm for smaller ones on short runs.

  • Soft copper in coils
  • 8mm in 10m or 25m coils
  • 10mm in 10m or 25m coils
  • Joints made with Compression or soldered fittings

Uncoil it properly. Stand the coil on edge on a flat floor and roll it out, holding the free end down, so it lies straight. Pulling it out sideways twists the tube and leaves kinks you will never fully lose. Use a bending spring or a small bender for tight bends, since bending by hand alone can flatten the pipe. Cut it with a small pipe slice, deburr the end, and fit an insert if your fitting maker calls for one. Copper fittings are listed in our copper pipe and hoses section.

Common Questions

Microbore copper pipe: 8mm or 10mm for a radiator?

10mm carries more water, so it is the usual pick for larger radiators or longer runs. 8mm suits small radiators on short drops from the manifold.

Can microbore be bent by hand?

Yes, it is soft, but use a bending spring or a small bender for tight bends, otherwise the tube can flatten and choke the flow.

What fittings join microbore copper?

8mm and 10mm Compression or soldered fittings. Use a small pipe slice so the soft tube is not squashed when you cut it.
