Where Speedfit PEX Barrier Pipe 22mm goes

Think boiler flow and return, cylinder feeds and main distribution under the floor. It’s John Guest’s cross-linked polyethylene pipe with a barrier layer that helps keep oxygen out of heating water, made to BS 7291 Class S. Joints are made with JG Speedfit Push Fit fittings, and no flame or solder is needed, which makes it handy in lofts and timber floors.

Fit a 22mm Speedfit pipe insert every time before the pipe goes into a fitting. Cut square with a plastic pipe cutter and check there’s no burr or score on the outside that could damage the O-ring. 22mm is stiffer than 15mm, so allow a gentle bend radius or use a bend fitting rather than kinking it. Use a plastic pipe cutter for a clean, square end. A hacksaw leaves a ragged edge that can damage the O ring.

Can I join 22mm Speedfit pipe to copper?

Yes, Speedfit fittings take copper too. Deburr the copper so it does not score the seal.

Why fit an insert in 22mm Speedfit pipe?

It supports the pipe wall from inside, so the pipe stays round and the joint holds its seal.
