JG Speedfit PEX Barrier 10mm Pipe Coil

JG Speedfit PEX Barrier 10mm Pipe Coil is the microbore size in the Speedfit range, used for the small feeds that run out to individual radiators. It comes off the roll in long, joint-free lengths, so it suits a run threaded under floorboards from a manifold or a 22mm main.

Microbore systems were common in older Scottish houses and flats, and plenty still need repairs or extensions. Because 10mm is thin and bendy, it snakes through joists and round obstacles that would need a handful of elbows in copper. Its barrier layer limits the oxygen getting into the heating water, so radiators see less rust and sludge. Bear in mind that 10mm carries less water than 15mm, so it suits single radiator drops rather than long main runs.

Fitting the JG Speedfit PEX Barrier 10mm Pipe Coil

Use a plastic pipe cutter for a square end, never a hacksaw. Fit a 10mm Speedfit pipe insert into every cut end before it goes into a fitting. Pencil a depth line, then push the pipe in until the line meets the fitting mouth. Clip it more often than copper, because plastic sags between supports. What is barrier pipe? Plastic pipe with a built-in layer that limits oxygen getting through the wall. This 10mm Speedfit coil has a blue barrier in the middle of five layers.

Can I replace old 10mm copper microbore with this? Yes, that’s one of its best uses. It threads through joists in long lengths, so a radiator can often be fed with no joints under the floor.

How many radiators will a 10mm tail feed? Speedfit put 10mm at about 1.9kW, so the norm is one tail per radiator.

Can I use metal reducing sets on the radiator valves? No, Speedfit say not to use metal 15mm to 10mm reducing sets with their pipe. Fit radiator valves made for 10mm instead.

How tight can I bend 10mm Speedfit pipe? Down to a 100mm radius with clips either side, and use an elbow for anything tighter. Don’t heat the pipe, and clip every 300mm on horizontal surface runs.

Do PEX joints leak? A properly made joint shouldn’t. Put a 10mm Speedfit insert in every pipe end and push the pipe fully into the fitting.
