On bigger jobs, JG Speedfit PEX Barrier 22mm Pipe Coil carries the main runs: boiler flow and return, the cold main through the house and the feeds that split off to 15mm branches. Buying it on the roll means long lengths with no joints buried under the floor.
22mm is the trunk of most domestic heating and water systems, so this is the coil you pull through first. PEX is cross-linked polyethylene, flexible enough to sweep round a corner but stiffer than 15mm. The barrier layer helps keep oxygen out of the heating water, and that means less corrosion in radiators and the boiler. It suits both new installs and replacing old steel or copper mains.
- Size: 22mm PEX barrier pipe
- Coil lengths: 25m or 50m
- For central heating and hot and cold water
- Joints made with JG Speedfit Push Fit fittings
Handling the JG Speedfit PEX Barrier 22mm Pipe Coil
Allow a wide bend radius, because 22mm will kink if you force it round a tight corner. Use an elbow there instead. Fit a 22mm insert in every cut end, and check the outside of the pipe for scores that could spoil the O-Ring Seal. Near the boiler, read the appliance instructions on where plastic can start. Clips, inserts and fittings live in our John Guest Speedfit pipe range.

Common Questions
What is PEX barrier pipe? It’s cross-linked polyethylene pipe with an oxygen barrier built in. On this Speedfit pipe the blue barrier sits in the middle of five layers and slows air getting into a sealed heating system.
What is 22mm barrier pipe used for? Hot and cold water and both vented and sealed central heating. In 22mm it’s ideal for heating mains and longer feeds pulled through joists.
Do PEX push-fit connections leak? Not when they’re made properly: cut the pipe square, fit a 22mm insert and push it fully into the Speedfit fitting. Using long lengths off a coil also means fewer joints in the first place.
Which coil length should I buy? As a rough guide, the 25m coil (22BPEX-25C) covers a flow and return main in a smaller house, and the 50m (22BPEX-50C) suits a bigger re-pipe.
Can I run the pipe right up to the boiler? No, Speedfit ask for at least a metre of copper from the boiler first unless the boiler maker says otherwise. Never use it on an uncontrolled heat source such as a solid fuel range.
How tight can I bend 22mm Speedfit pipe? Speedfit give a minimum radius of 225mm when clipped. On surface runs clip it every 500mm horizontally and 800mm vertically.
What pressures is the 22mm barrier pipe rated for? Speedfit list 12.5 bar on cold water at 20°C, 6 bar on hot water and 3 bar on central heating.
