Description

Plant rooms and service voids are full of the steel clamp, a two part pipe bracket that closes round the pipe with screws and hangs from threaded rod. This one is listed in sizes from small copper right up to large drainage pipe.

Steel clamp sizes

  • 15-19mm, 20-25mm, 26-30mm and 32-36mm
  • 38-43mm, 47-51mm, 60-64mm and 75-80mm
  • 87-92mm and 113-118mm
  • 138-142mm and 159-166mm

Every size is a clamping range, so you measure the outside of the pipe and choose the range it sits in. That lets one clamp cover copper, steel or plastic pipe of roughly the same outside size. The clamp has a threaded boss that takes rod or screws onto a male back plate, so you can fix close to the wall or hang the pipe lower from a ceiling.

Set the back plates or rod drops first, then hang the clamps and lay the pipe in. Close each clamp with both screws, tightening them evenly so the halves meet straight. On pumped systems or anywhere noise matters, a rubber lined clamp is a better pick. Space clamps closer on plastic pipe because it sags more than metal between supports. Back plates and hose clips are listed in our steel clamps category.

Common Questions

How do I pick a steel clamp size?

Measure the outside of the pipe and choose the clamp range that covers it. For example, 15mm copper suits the 15-19mm clamp.

Should I use a steel clamp or a rubber lined clip?

Plain steel clamps suit pipe where noise is not a concern. Where vibration or knocking travels into the building, a rubber lined clip is the better pick.

How far apart should pipe clamps go?

It depends on the pipe material and size: plastic needs closer supports than copper or steel. Add a support close to each bend, valve and heavy fitting.
