A universal flush button for replacing a broken or worn push button on a toilet cistern. A tidy fix when the old button sticks, cracks or no longer matches. Supplied by Plumb Parts in Glasgow.
A universal flush button replaces the push button on top of a toilet cistern. When a button sticks down, cracks, or the chrome flakes off, swapping it is a quick way to make the toilet work and look right again.
Fitting a universal flush button
Push buttons sit through a hole in the cistern lid and press down on the flush valve below. Before you buy, check the size of the hole in the lid and how the old button connects to the valve. Bring the old button in if you are unsure.
- Replacement flush button
- Fits through the cistern lid
- Fixes a stuck or broken button
- For push button operated cisterns
Lift off the lid and unscrew the old button from the underside. Fit the new one through the hole and tighten the ring. Adjust the push rods or links so they just touch the valve when the button is at rest.
Test both parts of the button if it is dual flush. If the toilet keeps running, the rods may be too long and are holding the valve open.
More buttons and flush parts are with our cistern fittings.

Common Questions
Will a universal flush button fit any toilet?
Not every one. It needs a lid hole of the right size and a valve that can be worked by push rods. Measure the hole and check how the old button worked.
Why is my new button not giving a full flush?
The push rods are probably too short to lift the valve all the way. Adjust them so they just touch the valve when the button is at rest.
Can a dual flush button go on a single flush valve?
The valve decides that. A single flush valve has only one lift point, so a dual button will not give you two flush sizes.
