Old cistern bolts rust, rubber seals go hard and the doughnut squashes flat. Replacing the valve alone and refitting tired washers is asking for a callback. With this kit you strip the cistern off the pan, fit the valve and new seals, and bolt it back together with fresh hardware.

Set the flush volume so the pan clears cleanly on the full flush without wasting water. Tighten the cistern bolts evenly, a bit at a time on each side, so the cistern sits level and the doughnut squeezes evenly. Over-tightening can crack the ceramic, so stop once the cistern no longer rocks.

Turn the water back on slowly and look under the cistern for drips before you leave the job.

The doughnut seals the cistern to the pan, and once the cistern is off it rarely seals well again. Fitting a new one avoids a leak later.

How tight should close coupled cistern bolts be?

Tighten evenly, a bit at a time each side, until the cistern stops rocking. Going further can crack the ceramic.

Is a dual flush valve worth it?
