Common Questions

What is a reducing elbow? It turns the pipe through 90 degrees and drops the size at the same time. This one is female threaded at both ends, so it takes male threaded pipe or fittings.

Can black malleable iron fittings be used on gas? Yes, black malleable iron is widely used on natural gas pipework. Any gas installation must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Are black iron fittings OK for a water supply? They are well suited to heating pipework. For water supplies many installers go for the galvanised version in the same range, as plain black iron can rust on the inside.

Can I paint black malleable fittings? Yes. Clean off any oil or grease first, then a metal primer and topcoat will take well.

How do I seal and tighten the threads? Put a suitable thread sealant or PTFE tape on the male thread and tighten with a pipe wrench, as the tapered threads pull up tight. On gas, make sure the sealant is approved for gas.

How are black iron pipe sizes measured? The inch sizes are nominal bore sizes, not the outside measurement, so 3/4 inch pipe measures quite a bit more than 3/4 inch across. Check your existing fittings or ask us if you are unsure.

Do elbows reduce water flow? Every bend adds a bit of resistance, so a run with lots of elbows will lose some flow. Where there is room, a bend with a gentler sweep helps.
