Description

Brass Barrel Nipple

Brass Barrel Nipple used to connect pipework, fittings, or appliances that have a female thread.

Brass Fittings

Brass is one of the most common materials used for making fittings, as a construction material is an alloy (primarily) of copper and zinc.

Brass fittings are in high demand because of some inherent properties which make them superior to other materials and are suitable for carrying water, gases, chemicals, fire sprinkler systems, etc. Brass and DZR fittings are designed and manufactured in sizes ranging from 1/8″ to 4″.

They are made with BSP threads to BS EN 10226-1 (formerly BS 21, ISO 7/1).

Most brass threaded fittings are hot forged, giving them greater strength to weight ratio.
Fittings made of brass are available in a wide variety of shapes and thread sizes to connect, control any air or liquid flow in a pipe or tube.

Brass fittings are used in industrial, automotive, and truck applications because they are strong and durable.
The advantages of brass for fittings include its good corrosive resistance, and also it’s plating, joining, polishing and finishing characteristics.

Brass as a material is easily machined and so can be given any shapes of the various types of fittings available.

 • Relative Softness of Metal Provides for a Tight Seal and Ease of Installation.
 • Brass provides a more solid platform (vs. plastics) to facilitate the flow of air and liquids.
 • Brass fittings have excellent high-temperature ductility and reasonable cold ductility.

Common Questions

What is a brass barrel nipple? It is a short brass fitting with a male thread at both ends. It joins pipework, fittings or appliances that have female threads.

How do I install a brass barrel nipple? Seal the male threads with PTFE tape or a suitable thread sealant, then screw it into the female fitting and tighten it up firmly without forcing it.

How do I tell what size pipe nipple I need? They go by the thread size of the female fittings you are joining, not the outside measurement. If you are unsure, bring the old fitting into the shop and we will match it.

What is the difference between a barrel nipple and a hex nipple? A hex nipple has a hexagon in the middle for a spanner, while a barrel nipple has a plain round middle. Both have a male thread at each end.

How do I tighten a barrel nipple? With no hexagon to grab, it is tightened on the middle with pipe grips or a wrench. Seal the threads first and tighten firmly without overdoing it.

Does pipe nipple length include the threads? Yes, a nipple is measured end to end, threads and all.
