Description

Brass Hexagonal Reducing Nipple

Brass Hexagonal Reducing Nipple used when a reduced size male spigot is required in a larger fitting.

Brass Fittings

Brass is one of the most common materials used for making fittings, as a construction material is an alloy (primarily) of copper and zinc.

Brass fittings are in high demand because of some inherent properties which make them superior to other materials and are suitable for carrying water, gases, chemicals, fire sprinkler systems, etc. Brass and DZR fittings are designed and manufactured in sizes ranging from 1/8″ to 4″.

They are available in either BSPT parallel or taper threads to BS EN 10226-BSPT parallel or taper threads to BS EN 10226-1:2004/BS 21 – ISO7/1.

Most brass threaded fittings are hot forged, giving them greater strength to weight ratio.
Fittings made of brass are available in a wide variety of shapes and thread sizes to connect, control any air or liquid flow in a pipe or tube.

Brass fittings are used in industrial, automotive, and truck applications because they are strong and durable.
The advantages of brass for fittings include its good corrosive resistance, and also it’s plating, joining, polishing and finishing characteristics.

Brass as a material is easily machined and so can be given any shapes of the various types of fittings available.

 • Relative Softness of Metal Provides for a Tight Seal and Ease of Installation.
 • Brass provides a more solid platform (vs. plastics) to facilitate the flow of air and liquids.
 • Brass fittings have excellent high-temperature ductility and reasonable cold ductility.

Common Questions

What is a reducing nipple? It is a brass fitting with two male threads of different sizes and a hexagon in the middle. Use it when you need a smaller male spigot going into a larger fitting.

What sizes does the brass reducing nipple come in? It comes in 3/8 inch x 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch x 3/8 inch and 3/4 inch x 1/2 inch.

How do I seal a brass reducing nipple? Wrap the male threads with PTFE tape or use a suitable thread sealant, then screw it in and tighten with a spanner on the hexagon.

Which way round does a reducing nipple go? The larger thread screws into the bigger female fitting and the smaller thread takes the smaller female fitting.

What is the difference between a reducing nipple and a reducing bush? A reducing nipple has a male thread at both ends. A bush has a male thread outside and a female thread inside, so it screws into a larger fitting to take a smaller male thread.

What is the reducing nipple made from? It is brass, an alloy of mainly copper and zinc, with a hexagon in the middle for a spanner.
