A Brass Radiator Vent is the small valve that lets you bleed air out of a radiator so it heats all the way to the top. Turn it with a radiator key, let the air hiss out, and close it again once water appears.
Choosing a brass radiator vent
Vents wear, get painted over, or snap when someone forces them. Replacing one is a cheap fix for a radiator that will not bleed. The thread size must match the tapping you are screwing into. On radiators, the vent often goes into a plug in the top corner. Bigger threads suit other high points in the system where air collects.

Common Questions
Which brass radiator vent size do I need?
Match the thread of the tapping or plug it screws into. Take the old vent with you if you are not sure.
Can I replace a radiator vent without draining the system?
On a sealed system you can drop the pressure and work quickly with a cloth, but it is safer to drain the rad below the vent first. Top the pressure back up afterwards.
Why will my radiator vent not open?
It may be painted over or seized. A little penetrating oil and a well-fitting key usually free it, but replace it if the square is rounded.
Bleeding tips from our Glasgow team
Turn the heating off and let the system cool before you swap a vent. On a sealed system, drop the pressure first. Unscrew the old vent with a little water ready to escape, have a cloth handy, and seal the new one as the fitting needs. Once it is in, bleed the radiator, then top the system pressure back up to the boiler maker’s figure.
Take the old vent with you to the counter if you are unsure of the thread size. The Brass Radiator Vent and other bits are listed under brass fittings.
